Boyd returns, Red Stars fall 1-0 to Courage

CHICAGO, Ill. (August 15, 2021) - Emily Boyd returns to the Red Stars Starting XI for the first time in two years, however, Chicago fell to the North Carolina Courage on the road 1-0 Sunday, August 15.

1’ - Kealia Watt looks to open the game’s scoring just thirty seconds in, but North Carolina’s Casey Murphy gets a hand on it.

31’ - NC’s Carson Pickett has a close-range header attempt on goal, but it’s knocked away by Tatumn Milazzo

39’ - North Carolina’s Amy Rodriguez scores a penalty kick via a Kayla Sharples handball to give the Courage the lead.

78’ - Mallory Pugh has another shot on target, but Murphy knocks it down. 84’ - Kealia Watt’s shot from the left side of the box is just saved by Murphy.

  • Emily Boyd’s 2021 debut was both a long time coming and an emotional one, as it marked her NWSL appearance since 2019 after coming off an ACL injury. Despite the penalty conversion by North Carolina’s Amy Rodriguez, Boyd looked confident throughout the game and finished with four saves and a punch.

  • Zoe Morse also had a debut of her own, making her first career regular season appearance after coming in for Alyssa Mautz in the 82nd minute.

  • Alyssa Mautz made another return to the Red Stars XI, beginning the game in Chicago’s midfield in place of the injured Morgan Gautrat. Mautz finished the game with 27 touches, a tackle, 17 passes, and a blocked shot before being subbed off in the second half.

  • Katie Johnson entered the starting lineup today and looked active throughout the entire game. Johnson had two shots, two registered key passes, the team lead in passes with 33, 47 touches and would contribute a tackle defensively.

  • After being on the receiving end of bad looking tackle last week, which would force her to leave the game, Danny Colaprico returned to the Red Stars’ Starting XI. Colaprico finished her evening with 45 touches, two tackles, a clearance and an interception each, and 31 passes before being part of a triple substitution at the 82nd minute
